Around the world, 2 million children, primarily girls, are trapped. They are locked up and exploited in brothels, massage parlors, or garages, forced into sexual exploitation. This includes the Netherlands. They have nowhere to turn. Their freedom, along with their youth, dignity, and safety, has been taken from them. And with that, their future.
Free a Girl is actively involved in the detection and rescue of these girls, and does everything possible to ensure that those who have abused them are actually prosecuted. It’s important to us to properly inform you about our activities.
Rescues and Aftercare
Free a Girl supports professional organizations in various countries that liberate girls from situations of sexual exploitation. These organizations investigate where underage girls are being held and then conduct raids in collaboration with the police. They literally break doors down. Since the issues in different countries vary, each country requires a different approach. For example, in India, underage girls are often trapped in brothels, while in Nepal, they are mostly held in dance bars.
By investing in online investigation methods, we are also finding more victims who are offered through the internet. We also provide victims with immediate shelter and aftercare. If possible, we will always reunite the girls with their family.
Impunity
To tackle the problem of sexual exploitation of children, perpetrators must be arrested and prosecuted. We do this, among other things, by providing legal support to the girls in making a report and informing them about their rights. We share information about suspects with the police and advocate for improvements in legislation.
Furthermore, Free a Girl has set up the School for Justice program in India and Nepal. School for Justice is a program where victims and daughters of victims of sexual exploitation can become the best lawyers, paralegals, police officers, social workers, sociologists, and journalists in their country, so that they can join us in the fight against sexual exploitation and impunity. Thanks to this program, the girls can work on their own future and get the best out of themselves.
Many girls have been rescued from illegal brothels by Free a Girl in collaboration with local authorities, but perpetrators are seldom punished. To bring about lasting change in the countries where we are active, survivors must be empowered to fight back against their abusers.
